Artist of the Day: The Bird and the Bee

A little light music for a dreary day. Makes me want to go home and play my little Korg keyboard, especially at the 2 minute mark in “La la la”. By the way, these guys released a Hall and Oates cover album – which you should definitely check out – see videos below, and enjoy!

Here’s a live performance of Hall & Oates’ “I can’t go for that”…

Song of the Day: Kingdom of the Birds by Ian Neal

A friend living in Portland, Oregon sent me this link to her friend’s record label, Middle Management.  This was the artist that appeared on that page, I really liked the way in which Ian Neal blends electronic and psychedelic sounds.  It’s the perfect soundtrack for a lazy sunny afternoon.

Nature of Sound

In June, I participated in a music festival organized by www.makemusic.org, that features 1000 free concerts in New York City on the longest day of the year. I got a chance to set up my sound installation in the heart of the Meatpacking district, and this is a brief video clip showing people wandering through the installation and setting off sounds.

Song of the Day: My Red Hot Car by Squarepusher

Perhaps it’s due to the fact that I’ve watched far too much Top Gear in the past couple of weeks, I can’t help but listen to “My Red Hot Car” by Squarepusher. I first heard of this guy in a music composition class, our professor was cool, and presented us with really interesting electronic music every week. We’d listen to the music and try to figure out how specific sounds/effects were recorded, basically deconstructing the sounds we each heard – and it was pretty fun. So here it is…

Artist of the Day: Madlib

On a rainy and chilly afternoon, somewhere in the East Village, while eating hot noodles, this comes on and we turn to each other and say, who is that? We ask the Japanese waiter, and he brings over this cd. Though it’s a couple years old, it’s one of those albums that I missed, and happened upon, so I figured I’d post it for any others who may have missed it…

Future Pompadours: Janelle Monae Is Slick

Best way to describe my pick for artist of the day is to use my colleague’s statement, “She is a breath of fresh air”.  Janelle Monae can sing, she can dance, and she’s got an incredibly polished style, it’s hard to believe she’s only 25.  Her music is infectious, and in me, evokes a similar energy to Outkast’s B.O.B – and there’s good reason for this, Big Boi is credited as executive producer on both of her albums.  Here’s a video featuring her James Brown-like dancing, and her fabulous POMPADOUR!

I had to add the video for “Cold War”, because I can’t stop listening to it!

Song and Show of the Day: The Mighty Boosh – Electro Boy

The Mighty Boosh
Words do no justice to what you are about to witness. So I suggest that you watch the following and add “The Mighty Boosh” tv series to your Netflix queue STAT! It is like watching the lovechild of Flight of the Conchords and PeeWee’s Playhouse on acid. Perhaps that’s an unfair comparison – as it is unlike anything I’ve ever watched before. It’s the kind of show that grows on you, kind of like licorice….yum…now I want licorice.

Funniest Man Alive #2: Steve Coogan as Alan Partridge

…you know when you see your friend, and you’re calling for them but they don’t hear you? Alan’s had that happen, and he never gives up!

Funniest Man Alive: Matt Berry

I think Matt Berry is the funniest man alive. I will spread the word, and recommend you see everything he’s ever done. I realize the whole NYU thing is a lost cause, does anybody remember LAUGHTER?!

…this is from a tv show…

Song of the Day: Pop the Glock by Uffie

I like the use of the vocoder in this song. It’s not a new song, but a lot of people haven’t heard it, so I’m posting Uffie’s “Pop the Glock”. It’s sugar for the ears and eyes, especially since I’m on a pop music kick lately.

Video + Song of the Day: Telephone by Lady Gaga

The combination of Gaga and Beyonce is like a magical unicorn that poops out Reese’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups. I wanted to feature this video and song because it’s exactly how pop music should sound and look.

The video for “Telephone” is supposed to be part two of the “Paparazzi” video, which is below:
